It hasn’t been that long since I graduated from high school, so my senior portrait experience is not too difficult to remember. The MPR [Multi Purpose Room] was transformed in to a makeshift portrait studio, there were 8-10 backdrops set up with a photographer manning each station. When a photog was free [no matter which backdrop they were at] seniors were directed to that station, a few shots were snapped, and then it was over. I mean, depending on which overpriced package you purchased you would get to go to a few different backdrops, but at each one you worked with a different photographer so no one took the time to get to know you.
I’ve heard that story over and over again. Everyone I know had that senior portrait experience, they ended up photographs showcasing awkward fake smiles, giant white numbers of their graduating class, super cheesy poses and very little if any of their personality.
Stories like that make me SO excited for the opportunity to work with high school students this coming year, I love that the teens I work with are going to end up with photos personalized to them. Real smiles, fun locations and an overall celebration of life during senior year. Gah! I’m so excited!
